Study Buddy, Hall of Fame Induction, Cousin Gives Sermon

At first I thought I was going to be jumping into Nursing School alone, with nobody to talk to until getting to know the new strangers in my class. I was a bit bummed out until learning some great news! It’s official that a friend I took CNA 2 classes with will be going to the same school as I am with the same course load! I’m so excited. She and I have been talking about what to get, nerves of not knowing what to expect, and happiness that we got in! I’m super excited! She is too, but she is due to have a baby in July, so she has other things to occupy her mind like a little one growing and kicking in her belly!

Orientation is sometime in June, so with 10 days left of May it is surely coming up fast! I hope we will get a lot of questions answered! I know that we will be ordering our clinical bags for sure. (They are duffel sized bags that have all the supplies we need to practice skills at home and also to bring to use when we do skills check-offs at school. They have needles, saline vials, iv bags, catheter kits, etc. It’s like a fun play date to go digging around in it to see what we can “play” with during school! It’s like a box of legos to a kid, so much fun it makes me smile just thinking about it!) Also, we’ll be trying on and ordering our uniforms. I have heard thru the grapevine that they are red and black, but I’m not sure which is red and which is black (scrub top and pants that is). Those are my “martial arts” colors for sure so it’s going to be colors I enjoy wearing!

And since I’ve mentioned martial arts, let me add another piece of great news! My Sensei (karate teacher) is being inducted into the Hall of Fame this year at the end of July! He has been teaching for 30 years nonstop, and has been training since 1975! He has 44 black belts under him (I think) and two have reached as high as 4th degree black belt! While we are all eons away from catching up to Sensei in rank (he’s 7th degree black), his knowledge is even further out of our reach. I am honored to train under his tutilege and hope to be more like him as I grow older. Congratulations Sensei!

I went to church this Sunday at my cousin’s church. It was youth Sunday and he had the honors and task of delivering the adult sermon for the service. He did a great job and emphasized how we should do good things one at a time and will thereby make a lasting impact as Christians on this Earth! It was a great sermon. Being only 18 and about to embark on his college career at UNC, I couldn’t be more happy and proud of all that he has done! He is a model gentleman and if he weren’t my cousin would DEFINITELY be husband material! 🙂 I say that to show how much I think of him and how pleased I am with his morals, values, and life! So proud of you Westray!

So sore from 1st night back at Dojo

I went back to class on Wednesday (today is Friday) and I am SO SORE now! It wasn’t too grueling of a workout, but I haven’t used a lot of those muscles for close to 5 months and I really felt it! I showed up to help the kids classes and that was a lot of fun! Then the adult class began! We started with Sensei Cunningham leading light warm-ups aside from the major ab workout and the 60 pushups. Then He, Duke, and I went to the back to work on Chatan Yara Sai, and Tuifa… and Duke and I finished up with All 3 bo kata. While we worked the first two weapons, the rest of the class was led by the brown belts (Keith, Alice, and Daniel) and the 9 kicks were led by the only purple belt (Rebecca). Then Duke and I worked the bo forms while the rest of the class split up into groups to work kata and basics.

It was a great turn-out according to Duke as there was he, I, Keith, Alice, Daniel, Rebecca, Gerald, Molly, Hannah, Ms. Riggs, and a couple other white belts. I think all had a good time! If only the mudansha (below black belt holders) would come early and help out with the kids classes!

I’ve been taking advil to help with the muscle soreness. Have to go to work tonight and my back is still aching. I will make do though. God’s got me and will never let me go. Hopefully working out next week (and each week after) the soreness will decrease each time. I’m SO happy to be back at the dojo. It’s where my heart has been all the while I’ve been out! It was great to spend time with Sensei. He continues to be my inspiration regarding so many things! Also, Duke had a lot of good help on me cleaning up my Shi Shi No Kun no Dai… which I left out a chunk of. He also helped me get up to date on some other things as well.
