Nursing: I began nursing school in August 2011. I completed the entire first semester but missed the minimum cutoff on my grade by two points on the final, so I was dropped from the program. In April 2012 I received my acceptance letter to a different nursing program that has a far superior retention rate as well as high pass rate on the first attempt at NCLEX, so I am excited about the change. —– I became a CNA 1 in January 2012 and a CNA 2 in April 2012.
Christianity: I went to church as a kid, but very sparcely as a teen. After beginning college in 2005 I got hooked up with a group of people on fire for God. My whole approach to worship and devotion changed when I attended Daystar Fellowship Church in Greensboro,NC. There, in September of 2006 I was baptized and proclaimed my acceptance of Jesus Christ as my Savior! While life hasn’t been perfect and happy all the time, I still have a deep love for God and try my best to do as He would have me.
Martial Arts: I began training in GojuShorin when I was about 7. I earned my white belt and quit because I didn’t like it. At the age of 8 I began training in Isshinryu Karate in Tarboro,NC under Tim Cunningham. I trained long enough to get my yellow belt and get close to testing for my orange belt and then quit because I was scared to fight people. I tried to start back in 1999, at the age of 11, but the flood from Hurricanes Dennis and Floyd led to remodeling in our home, so I didn’t get the chance to start back. In Feb. 2000, my sister wanted to lose weight so she went to a class at the same Dojo (training facility) and I went with her just to watch. The very next class I started back. I trained from Feb. 2000 all the way up until July 2011 nonstop. I trained with various people, but my Sensei (teacher) responsible for my progress and promotions in rank was always Sensei Cunningham. In June 2009 I tested for and received the rank of Sandan (3rd degree black belt) along with the title Sensei. ——- After falling and receiving a fracture in my back in the summer of 2011, I slowed down in attendance at the dojo. I went through rigorous physical therapy, and in August 2011, began nursing school. Nursing studies quickly took away my recreational activity time, so I frequented the dojo less. In the Spring of 2012 I enrolled in a CNA 2 night class and worked Thurs, Fri, and Saturday nights so I had no chance to go to the dojo though my heart was there all along. In May 2012 I returned to working out at the dojo on a regular basis.
Hobbies: Things I find fascinating and research/do when I can other than the above are music, math, talking/sitting with the elderly and gaining their wisdom, and psychology. I hope to either work in nurse management, as a psych nurse, as a nursing instructor, or as a nurse practitioner in the future. But for now it’s one step at a time!
